Zama protocols Zama rallies 27% as whales and institutions bet on private defi

Zama Protocol’s native token ZAMA has staged a sharp rally, climbing more than 27% in the last 24 hours and outperforming the broader privacy-focused crypto sector. The move comes alongside a strong pickup in trading activity and growing interest from both large individual holders and professional investors who see privacy as a core requirement for institutional adoption of decentralized finance.

At the time of writing, ZAMA’s daily trading volume has expanded by over 185%, reaching around $100 million. That figure is nearly on par with its current market capitalization of roughly $110.38 million, underscoring how actively the token is being traded in the short term. Yet, the project’s fully diluted valuation (FDV) stands much higher, at about $564 million – nearly five times its present market cap, highlighting the substantial amount of supply that has yet to enter circulation.

Liquidity conditions around ZAMA are moderate. The liquidity-to-market-cap ratio sits at approximately 2.51%, which generally indicates that smaller, retail-sized orders can be executed without extreme slippage. For large, institutional-sized orders, however, such liquidity can still pose challenges when entering or exiting sizeable positions, particularly during volatile price swings.

Tokenomics data reveals that 2.2 billion ZAMA are currently in circulation out of a total supply of 11.19 billion. In other words, only about 19.66% of the total supply is freely trading on the market, while the remaining 80%-plus is set to be released over time. According to available figures, around 4.06 million tokens – worth roughly $200,000 – are entering the market each day. In addition, substantial annual unlocks of about 1.98 billion ZAMA are scheduled each year until 2030, creating a predictable, long-running stream of new supply.

Ordinarily, such a heavy and sustained unlock schedule would be expected to place downward pressure on price, as new tokens search for buyers. However, recent on-chain activity suggests that much of this freshly released supply is being steadily absorbed. A notable example is a single large holder who has been aggressively accumulating ZAMA from the Kraken exchange. Over just the last two days, this whale has purchased more than 28 million tokens, including a recent transaction of roughly 14.26 million ZAMA valued at around $571,000.

Zooming out further, this same address has amassed approximately 98.18 million ZAMA over the past 125 days, with a notional value close to $3.93 million. This sustained demand from a single large participant goes a long way toward explaining why the token has been able to appreciate even as new tokens hit the market daily. In essence, aggressive spot buying is soaking up the additional supply as quickly as it is unlocked.

It is not just individual whales showing confidence. Institutional players have also begun to take positions in ZAMA. One high-profile example is Multicoin Capital, whose co-founder and managing partner, Tushar Jain, has publicly signaled a bullish stance on the asset. He has emphasized that institutions cannot operate effectively in open, fully transparent environments and therefore rely on privacy-preserving infrastructure. From his perspective, Zama and other privacy coins such as ZEC are central to enabling “private DeFi” – decentralized financial services that can meet regulatory, competitive, and operational privacy needs of businesses and funds.

This narrative of “privacy as infrastructure” is increasingly important in a world where on-chain activity is fully visible to anyone with a blockchain explorer. Institutional traders, market makers, and corporates often need to keep sensitive strategies, counterparties, and financial flows confidential. Publicly exposing treasury moves, hedging strategies, or acquisition-related transactions can invite front-running, competitive intelligence leaks, or even legal and security risks. Zama Protocol positions itself as a solution to this problem, providing cryptographic tools designed to allow computation on encrypted data without revealing the underlying information.

Social sentiment has also added fuel to the rally. ZAMA has recently been trending at or near the top spots on major data aggregators, ranking first in one trending list and second in another. Over the past week, the token has delivered gains exceeding 41%, which in turn attracts additional attention from traders scanning for momentum plays. This feedback loop between price performance and social buzz can temporarily amplify moves in either direction, and for now, it has been pushing ZAMA higher.

Technically, the daily chart paints a picture of a breakout-driven move. Since its token generation event (TGE) in early February 2026, ZAMA had been trading within an ascending trend channel, repeatedly respecting both support and resistance lines. In the latest surge, the token broke decisively above the upper boundary of that channel, invalidating the former resistance and signaling a potential shift into a steeper uptrend.

Following this breakout, ZAMA printed a new all-time high at approximately $0.05171. Momentum indicators back up the idea that buyers are currently in control. The MACD histogram has been expanding in favor of the bulls, pointing to strengthening upward momentum. At the same time, cumulative volume delta (CVD) data is largely positive, indicating that more ZAMA is being aggressively bought than sold at the ask. On Binance’s spot market alone, more than 40 million ZAMA have been absorbed on the buy side, underscoring strong demand at current and even rising price levels.

The latest move has been built on a four-day winning streak that started at a key trendline support area around $0.0300. From there, successive daily gains carried the price above the upper trendline of the previous channel, turning what had been a resistance zone into a potential support band. Nevertheless, the rally is not without risk. With a relatively small holder base – around 7,640 wallets currently own ZAMA – the market may be more vulnerable to volatility if a few large players decide to take profits or reduce exposure.

From a price-structure perspective, traders should also factor in the possibility of a classic post-breakout retest. After large impulsive moves, assets often pull back to retest former resistance zones as new support before deciding on the next direction. In ZAMA’s case, a retracement toward the $0.045 region or even slightly below is plausible. That level could serve as a test of buyer conviction and may attract fresh entries from those waiting on the sidelines for a better risk-reward setup.

Beyond the immediate rally, the token’s long-term trajectory will likely be shaped by how the market digests its token unlock schedule. Annual unlocks of nearly 2 billion ZAMA through 2030 represent a substantial and recurring supply overhang. If demand from whales, institutions, and organic users of the protocol keeps pace with or exceeds these unlocks, the price impact could be manageable or even neutral. Conversely, any slowdown in buying interest may expose the market to prolonged sell pressure as large tranches of new tokens search for bids.

This is where Zama’s fundamental usage and adoption become critical. For the protocol to justify both its current valuation and its much larger fully diluted valuation, it needs to demonstrate real-world use cases where its privacy technology is not just desirable, but essential. These could include private credit markets, confidential order books, shielded derivatives trading, or enterprise-focused tools that enable businesses to move assets and data on-chain without sacrificing operational secrecy.

If institutions begin integrating Zama’s technology into their internal workflows or DeFi strategies, that could translate into sustained demand for the token – whether through staking, collateral use, gas-like functions, or other forms of protocol participation. Over time, such utility-driven demand tends to be more durable than short-lived speculative flows tied solely to price momentum.

At the same time, privacy projects occupy a complex regulatory landscape. Governments and regulators around the world are still working out how to treat privacy-preserving assets, particularly when they can be used to obscure illicit activity. Any significant shifts in policy – whether supportive, neutral, or restrictive – could materially influence sentiment around ZAMA and similar tokens. Institutional investors, in particular, will be highly attuned to regulatory clarity and compliance pathways when deciding how aggressively to allocate capital.

For short-term traders, ZAMA now looks like a classic high-volatility play driven by momentum, narrative, and whale activity. The key elements to monitor include: ongoing whale accumulation or distribution, changes in trading volume, reactions to daily and annual token unlocks, and whether the current breakout zone holds as support on any pullbacks. Sharp intraday swings are likely as early entrants consider locking in profits while new traders chase the move.

For longer-term participants, the more important questions revolve around fundamentals and execution: Can Zama translate its cryptographic capabilities into live, revenue-generating products? Will institutions actually use the protocol to solve real privacy problems? And will the team manage the token supply and community growth in a way that balances incentives across early backers, new entrants, and end-users?

In summary, Zama Protocol’s ~27% daily surge reflects a confluence of factors: accelerating trading activity, aggressive whale accumulation, early institutional positioning, and a broader narrative that “institutions need privacy to operate” in an increasingly transparent on-chain world. The token has broken to new highs on strong momentum, but it faces a long road of substantial unlocks, relatively concentrated ownership, and an evolving regulatory environment. Whether ZAMA can sustain its trajectory will depend less on today’s price spike and more on its ability to convert privacy as a principle into privacy as indispensable infrastructure for the next generation of decentralized finance.
